The finest RV sites and campsites in Friesland – Elfstedentocht
We were lucky enough to drive the Camperelfstedentocht (I’m Maaike from the travel blog Reisgelukjes with my husband Tom and our renovated T4 camper van). Along the way we passed by some fine camper places and campsites in Friesland and these are our experiences with this great adventure in our own country.
Spending the night with a camper at the Sudersé campsite in Workum
The first night we stayed at Camping Sudersé in Workum. At this spacious campsite you can choose a spot on the field, or more sheltered among the vegetation. Workum is so close that you can see the church tower. And on the other side you’ll find the IJsselmeer, which also attracts many (kite)surfers to the campsite. It is a cozy campsite, so there is also a flower picking garden and a field with goats. Of course you can also order rolls for the next morning. A fine camper place so for during the Eleven Cities Tour.
Marina Stavoren Buitenhaven also has a camper spot
In Stavoren, you can also enjoy camping at the Camper place of Marina Stavoren Buitenhaven. You can stand here on a field or a paved camper place. All within walking distance of the IJsselmeer. Lovely, because it was quite warm when we drove the Camperelfstedentocht and we walked so to the beach for a refreshing dip! On this camper place you also have sanitary facilities and you can ask the harbor master where your dirty water may go.
Also nice: from here you walk right to restaurant de Potvis where you can have a nice bite to eat with IJsselmeer view. To Stavoren itself is a 15-minute walk, or a few minutes by bike.
Motorhome site Leeuwarden
Camperplaats Leeuwarden belongs to the enthusiastic owner Margreet Dröge, also initiator of the Camperelfstedentocht. This camper place is also great at the marina. We ourselves could unfortunately not stand here, because the sanitary facilities we need are not here. We would like to come back again as soon as there are, or we have a camper with its own sanitary facilities.
Margreet wouldn’t be Margreet if she had additionally arranged extra experiences for RVers. Stay here and use the discount key to pick up 4 free sandwiches at the Jumbo found a 10-minute walk away. Plus, there are about 40 more businesses with which there are collaborations. So much fun!

During the Motorhomeelfstedentocht, of course, we did not just sit in front of the motorhome. For example, we visited the Elfsteden fountains of Workum, Stavoren and Leeuwarden. We traveled part of the real Elfsteden route on pedal boats in Workum and in Leeuwarden with a real Venetian gondola. We also went shopping for Frisian regional products at Ut Streekie to pick up the goodies we received on presentation of the stamp card.
